ARC provided by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Layla just turned seventeen but she is different that her human friends. She is part Warden and part Demon.  She has been living protected under the Warden's care for years.  Her best friend is Zayne, the gargoyle who also has part of her heart.  Layla knows that a relationship is forbidden since he has a pure soul.  Layla struggles with her desire to steal (meaning kiss/inhale) souls. The purest the soul the worse the hunger.
Layla's future is unclear when evil stars following her and trying to capture her. Escaping one of those evils is how she meets Roth.
Roth is an Upper Level Demon. He never tries to be something he isn't. He tells Layla he will lie to her but in a way he is the most truthful of all the people surrounding her. He also doesn't seem to have a soul, so kissing him shouldn't be a problem. Maybe, stop doing it might.
Suddenly her world is upside down. White and black are not the only choices and with a darker evil lurking that could affect not only Wardens and demons but the whole world, the trust place in the wrong hands can be fatal.

I'm so happy JLA wrote another series. I'm a sucker for anything this woman writes.  Lately, I have been staying away from new supernatural series. Maybe it's because I have read tons in the last 4 years. So I picked this book wary about it. It took me probably one chapter to get me in the Warden/Demon zone. Yes, she is that good.
I liked Layla from the beginning.  She is smart, funny, knows how to fight, and she doesn't think she is the best thing since ice cream was invented. Also, she is battling her darker side every day and her crush on Zayne.
Zayne was nice and loyal but it did nothing for me once I met Roth (again. He was in the prequel). He made the story so much better. A bad guy, soulless but with a desire to protect her above his own agenda. It didn't surprise me that I cried at the end of this book. JLA is able to get that reaction from me in almost all of her books.

"The newcomer stood well over six feet, as tall as any Warden. His hair was dark, the color of obsidian, and it reflected blue in the dim light. Lazy locks slipped over his forehead and curled just below his ears. Brows arched over golden eyes and his cheekbones were broad and high. He was attractive. Very attractive. Mind-bendingly beautiful, actually, but the sardonic twist to his full lips chilled his beauty. The black T-shirt stretched across his chest and flat stomach. A huge tattoo of a snake curled around his forearm, the tail disappearing under his sleeve and the diamond-shaped head rested on the top of his hand. He looked my age. Total crush material—if it wasn’t for the fact that he had no soul."

I really can't wait for the next one. I sure hope Roth gets even more page time.
I don't want to end this review without mentioning Bambi. It took me 2 seconds to like her which I know I wouldn't in real life. I wonder what she will do next.

“I lost myself the moment I found you.”
